Italian Court Great Nicola Pietrangeli Passes Away at 92

The world of tennis is mourning a genuine icon: Nicola Pietrangeli, a two-time French Open champion, left us at 92.

Pietrangeli etched his name by becoming the pioneering Italian to capture a Grand Slam singles title, securing his maiden triumph at the French Open in 1959 and retaining the prestigious trophy in 1960.

With a staggering 48 career titles, Pietrangeli was widely considered the country's finest player prior to the advent of current world number two and four-time major winner Jannik Sinner.

"Italian tennis is in mourning for an legend. Nicola Pietrangeli, the only Italian inducted in the International Tennis Hall of Fame, has passed away," stated the Italian Tennis Federation.

In addition to his two French Open victories, Pietrangeli also was the finalist in Paris in both 1961 and 1964.

He boasts a record 164 matches played for Italy in the Davis Cup, winning 120 of them, and spearheaded his country to its first title in 1976.

Officials of the Italian Open, where he was a double winner, commented: "It is with deep sadness that we bid farewell to Nicola Pietrangeli, a true legend of Italian tennis..."
