Elden Ring's Dodge Roll Merits to Be Celebrated

If you've played the popular action RPG, or nearly any action-adventure title, you're likely acquainted with the fantastic mechanic known as the “dodge roll.” This evasion technique lets your avatar to carry out a front, lateral, or rearward tumble to evade all incoming damage and create distance from the bad guy. Sounds handy, wouldn't you say?

This rolling move, however, has gotten significant backlash, and not only as a result of the somersault; it's been labeled unintelligent, a cheap tactic, and an implausible action — and in some cases, I agree. Just imagine me tumbling about local Doppler gangs in The Witcher 3 — can't touch this Geralt! But Elden Ring's dodge roll is the dodge roll to surpass every other rolling dodges, and let me explain.

Regarding this title, the creators discovered a great way to counter all sentiments suggesting the technique is too easy: just grant each opponent unreasonable strength, triple that, and each player character who dares come near them will feel immensely thankful for their dodge-roll ability, I'm no exception. With so much on the line, evading successfully comes across as a triumph, rather than a cheap trick.

No alternative avoidance technique in this RPG approaches this sense of satisfaction and reliability, because swift moves offer limited distance and guard stances are easily broken by tough opponents. A person once suggested jumping as a go-to Elden Ring avoidance strategy, but besides failing to offer optimal placement, It wasn't clear to me taking a crushing hit would improve my chances of defeating bosses (skill issue, perhaps).

Learning the Move

But even though the dodge roll offers respite in an incredibly challenging experience, it requires practice. To begin with, Elden Ring's rolling dodge merely initiates a period of immunity following you release the dodge button, which stops a rapid, fearful withdrawal from dangerous scenarios. Furthermore, while it might move you aside from enemies, it's far more effective to utilize it as a moment to move nearer, optimally at their back, and land some hits. In conclusion, you still need grasp and foresee enemy attacks, because rolling prematurely of an extended wind-up might terminate your protection ahead of the attack striking… causing significant harm.

A Harmonious System

While dodge-rolling in rapid sequence could appear somewhat silly (credit to Geralt once more), this isn't really an option in the game. Certainly, that still doesn't make it a plausible combat move — exactly the reason it would be dreadful to witness it in a title like a realism-focused RPG — yet we're discussing a dazzling imaginative experience being considered, so who cares?

Like any proper rolling dodge, the game's rolling animation is enhanced with a small acrobatic jump at the start, providing a dynamic sensation as opposed to dropping the character downward. According to your loadout, the technique may seem incredibly quick or moderately cumbersome, yet it's always faster and more fluid than the dodge rolls featured in Dark Souls. Admittedly, you will stick your big blade into the ground while equipped with it, but that's your responsibility for avoiding ranged weapons (I'm joking — don't play Elden Ring with a crossbow).

Ideal Equilibrium

Elden Ring's evasion system establishes an ideal equilibrium between difficulty and chance, granting chances of triumph while risking the loss of that hope at the slightest mistake. Learn this skill, and you'll be rewarded with not only success, but fulfillment.
