At Least Six Lose Their Lives in Crowd Crush at Ghana Armed Forces Enlistment Drive

No fewer than 6 people have lost their lives amid a crowd crush at a armed forces enlistment event held in a stadium in the West African nation.

The midweek "tragic" event appeared to have been caused by "a sudden rush of candidates who breached security protocols and rushed into the entrances," stated a release from the nation's military.

Twenty-two others were injured, among them five who are in serious state.

Thousands had gathered at the El-Wak sports venue, in the capital, Accra, with the hope of joining the armed forces.

Ghana has a rate of joblessness among young people of about thirty-two percent, the latest government statistics show, and such enlistment drives typically attract large crowds and frequently lead to disorderly situations.

The closing date to apply for this event was extended by a week to allow for additional candidates, as some had experienced difficulties in the application procedure.

Military representative Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin stated the crush took place ahead of the planned commencement time of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.

Ghana's President John Mahama has visited the injured in medical care.

Order has been restored, and the enlistment process has now begun.
